Please join us in honouring the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls during the Sisters in Spirit Vigil.
Please join CIECYR in partnership with the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation community, in honouring the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls during the Sisters in Spirit Vigil at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 4, 2019, at the Newmarket Riverwalk Commons (200 Doug Duncan Drive, Newmarket, ON). Following the vigil, light refreshments will be served.
The Sisters in Spirit campaign was launched in March 2004 by the Native Women’s Association of Canada to honour the lives of missing and murdered First Nation, Inuit and Métis women and girls, including LGBTQ+, transgender and Two Spirit individuals.
The death and disappearance of Indigenous women and girls is a devastating loss that is felt in every Indigenous community across Canada. Children are left without sisters, mothers, aunties, and grandmothers. Parents are left with the type of grief that cannot heal without answers about what happened to their children. Communities are deprived of the knowledge, wisdom, and spirit of these cherished individuals.
The alarming rate of death and disappearance of Indigenous women and girls is an ongoing national tragedy. Systemic forms of violence and oppression, including sexual and physical violence, anti-Indigenous racism, socio-economic, cultural, institutional and historical causes, must be recognized as contributing factors that continue to perpetuate violence against Indigenous women and girls today.
Please register early as there is limited seating.
