Ancestral Voices: Identity and Belonging in Canada: Sherry Lawson

Join Newmarket Public Library online for our Ancestral Voices author series exploring the experiences of Indigenous, Caribbean and African Peoples in Canada.

We are pleased to host a presentation by author and storyteller, Sherry Lawson. Sherry will engage participants on the place of oral storytelling in the community. She will discuss her book, I've Been Shot At, What's Your Excuse?: Lessons From My Life, and others.

Sherry Lawson “Mnjikani- que” is the middle daughter of an Anishinaabe father and an Algonkinan mother. She grew up on the Rama Reserve (now home to Casino Rama) in the lean years starting in the late 1950’s. Wanting to leave a record of her life for her grandchildren, she has written three biographical books. Trained as a librarian, archivist, indexer, and anthropologist,Sherry has held many interesting jobs. Although she is known as a strong defender of the disadvantaged, a stellar volunteer, and an Indigenous storyteller, Sherry prefers to be simply known as Nookomis, “Grandmother”. Ancestral Voices is funded by Newmarket Public Library's fundraising reserve.

Presented in collaboration with Maxine Gordon Palomino and Kim Wheatley, Anishinaabe Consultant.
