Over the last decade, Newmarket-based painter Jianming Chen has documented settings of York Region through captivating oils. Working en plein air, Chen has become a recognizable figure in the community, seen with his easel at recreational trails, residential streets, and farmer’s markets, painting for hours on end. Only rarely is he deterred by the natural elements, which was demonstrated through his commitment to painting outside during his Winter residency at the ACC during peak snowy season.
On Wednesday, June 11, Jianming Chen will be doing a short talk and Q&A on his painting practice, followed by a communal plein air walk outside (weather pending):
• 6-6:30 PM: Artist Talk + Q&A (Location: Art Activity Room [Level B1])
• 6:30 – 8 PM: Communal Plein Air Walk (Location: TBD – the artist decides!)
• Follow Chen outside for a firsthand experience of the plein air process; select a scene, set up your station, then follow your artist’s intuition!
Pencils, charcoal, erasers, paper, and board provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring any additional materials they would like to do.
