“Screaming Red Lanterns” – Asian Heritage Month Edition!

May 3 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Artist, Yafang Shi, will be hosting an installation artwork “Screaming Red Lanterns” (Asian Heritage Month edition) at Queen’s Park on May 3 in Asian Heritage Month!

Event Details:

Who: Yafang Shi and Susan Wu

What: Shi and Wu will display a protesting installation artwork “Screaming Red Lanterns” (Asian Heritage Month edition) that they have created collaboratively.

When: May 3, from 10:30-12:00

Where: In front of the Legislative Building at Queen’s Park

After the event ends at 12:00 pm in Queen’s Park, Shi will also be available to meet members of the public at Ruth Upjohn Gallery (23 Prince Arthur Ave, Toronto) where her solo exhibition “Body, From an Intersectional and Transnational Perspective” is currently being exhibited.

Why: Yafang Shi and supporters of her feminist works have been fighting against the Aurora Public Library’s continued censorship and erasure of an exhibition on social movements for women’s rights created by Shi, as well as the ongoing discrimination and reprisal against Shi after she spoke out against the censorship. Since this original instance of censorship, a new regressive and exclusionary public art policy “impair(ing)” artists’ constitutional rights to freedom of expression has been released.

Initially displayed at Queen’s Park on International Women’s Day, “Screaming Red Lanterns” is a protest against the censorship and erasure of women’s voices and Shi’s feminist works by the Aurora Public Library. It also highlights the failures of the library board, the Town of Aurora, and the Aurora Town Council to address the issues of censorship, erasure, discrimination, and reprisal. The artwork also emphasizes these parties’ neglect of Shi’s call to establish a public art policy that respects artists’ rights to freedom of expression and a human rights policy that protects the rights of artists from marginalized positions within the library and the Town.

The Aurora Public Library censored and erased the term “anti-Asian racism” from Shi’s artist statement. On May 3, Shi and Wu will display “Screaming Red Lanterns” with Shi’s documentary photographs of a rally against anti-Asian racism, aiming to spotlight anti-Asian racism and showcase the Asian community’s unwavering resistance to it. This public art exhibition will continue to raise awareness of ongoing censorship issues in our community. Shi and Wu hope that the provincial politicians and Ontarians will hold the Aurora Public Library accountable since the library board, the Town of Aurora, and the Aurora Town Council have failed to do so.

The “Screaming Red Lanterns” art project has garnered support from the community and various organizations. The Kensington-Chinatown Local Immigration Partnership Network, consisting of close to 20 organizations, has invited Shi and Wu to showcase the “Screaming Red Lanterns” art project (“Celebration of Resistance” edition) at their Asian Heritage Month event “Art, Life and Love @Chinatown” on May 17, themed “Celebration of Resistance”. Shi will also deliver a presentation on the “Screaming Red Lanterns” art project at the event. The details of the event are on the attached poster.
