Get to know your local farmers – they’re sure to grow on you

Despite the fact that more than one million people call York Region home, the area remains an important agricultural centre. Farms of all sorts dot the region – with many of them developing programs that connect them directly with the end consumer. 

While many farms across the region participate in the many farmers’ markets that are held weekly in the region’s more urbran areas, many farmers are opening up their properties to showcase ‘grown local’ and ‘shop local’ initiatives and solutions. Over the next few weeks, experienceyorkregion.com is going to introduce you to some of the folks who are taking ag-tourism to the next level.

Niemi Family Farm is a family-owned-and-operated farm located in Mount Albert, with mama Marjo and papa Peter Niemi at the helm. The farm grows annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetable plants, vegetables, shrubs and trees, providing high quality plants without the use of pesticides. Niemi also offers space for local vendors to showcase their products. Aside from their mouth-watering old-fashioned donuts and farm-baked bread, the farm offers activities for the whole family to enjoy including, a Private Camp Fire, March Break Camp for Kids, Christmas Market and an Easter Bunny Trail.
