Body: From An Intersectional and Transnational Feminist Perspective

April 24 @ 12:00 pm - May 4 @ 5:00 pm

York Region based artist, Yafang Shi is presenting a solo exhibition at the Ruth Upjohn Gallery from April 24 – May 4, 2024. There will be an opening Reception & Artist Talk on April 27 from 1:30pm – 4:30pm.

Through conceptual and documentary photography, mixed media, and poetry, artist and poet Yafang Shi’s solo exhibition, “Body: From an Intersectional and Transnational Feminist Perspective”, explores the violence inflicted on women, girls, Two-Spirit, trans, and non-binary people, as well as the social forces behind it. The exhibition also delves into the fierce individual and collective resistance to such violence.

The title of Shi’s artist talk is “Violence against Women, Censorship, and Public Art Policy”. During the talk, she will share her lived experiences of censorship and erasure by public institutions, and how they have responded or failed to respond after censorship was exposed. Additionally, Shi will discuss the disproportionate censorship faced by racialized individuals from marginalized positions, its underlying causes, and suggestions for public institutions to improve their policies and practices in alignment with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Ontario Human Rights Code.

She cordially invites members of the public to view the exhibition and participate in discussions on the vital issues it raises.

More details of the exhibition, the opening reception, and artist talk can be found here.
