My YR – Dominic Sciullo

SHARE

Name: Dominic Sciullo

Occupation: Entertainment Entrepreneur and Media Executive

How long have you lived in YR? Just over 40 years

Why did you make YR home? York Region is where I grew up since I was 15. Markham to be exact. It’s also where I was most comfortable raising my family later on in life. My parents reside here in York Region as do many of my relatives. Despite being born in Italy, I’ve always considered Markham my true home.

What do you do for fun in YR? There is much to do in York Region given how far this region spans. It’s such a diverse community of outdoor entertainment, festivals to fine dining. Trails, lakes and wooded areas is where your likely to find me hanging out and decompressing with a hike in one of the many forests. After having spent over 3 decades employed downtown Toronto you realize the beauty and health aspects of having the ability to be around nature, within minutes of my home. Experiencing new York Region dining spots is where I’m usually found on the weekends.

What is one summer/winter event that you never miss in YR? Pre pandemic you could say that I’ve been a regular of the many Main Street Unionville Festivals. Being a local resident in Unionville makes it a great opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the neighbourhood with my daughters. Parades, music, shopping and local artists decorate Main Street Unionville regularly. Given my career in the Arts I always appreciate what the Markham Arts Council contributes to our communities from music, art shows, walks with art and simply connecting local artists in Unionville. Promoting the many diverse forms of art within the Unionville community makes us an attraction unto itself. As we know now, post Covid there are many people craving to get out again and enjoy the arts in all forms!

What are your favourite restaurants in YR? One of my new fav spots that I’ve been enjoying recently with friends is Locale Restaurant located in Aurora. It has one of the most comfortable and warmest patios around and of course they serve a great Branzino with Grilled Rapini!

What YR attractions/events/happenings would you recommend to friends who visit YR? This may be somewhat biased but there is a series of upcoming concerts that I will be presenting at the Peoples Theatre for the Performing Arts in Markham. Abbamania and also the Material Girls. Both concerts are tribute bands. Legendary media personality Gord Martineau of Citytv fame will host the events. We know that many people will want to get up, get out, dig out those platforms, dust down those flares and dance to all their favourite hits once again LIVE IN CONCERT..right here in York Region!

Bio: I’ve always felt at home here in York Region despite having spent much of my time in TO given my lengthy career in Broadcast Media downtown Toronto along with 10 years internationally, developing broadcast facilities. I’ve continued to reside here for many positive reasons. I’ve had the opportunity to meet many interesting residents here over the past 4 decades, some of whom are now close friends. I’m also involved in Provincial Politics here in York Region which has given me a fresh new perspective from the inside – out vs. how I once perceived this world of government as a videojournalist from the outside – in.
